The Problem
The most signifigant pain point for CDW users is the site search function, with user complaints that “It just sucks”.
The search function has a huge amount of technical debt. Creative solutions were needed to stop some of the financial hemorrhaging from displaying discontinued products and landing users on a no search results page.
Whiteboarding a Solution
Together with the Product Manager, Lead Developer and our Analytics Guru we begin whiteboarding ideas.
Suddenly, the idea struck us... What if when a user searched for a discontinued product we redirected them to the replacement product?
Validating with our Users
I created a rough Axure prototype and contacted the users we had initially talked to about the problematic search experience.
In a JoinMe session our users made fantastic suggestions such as: adding a small message that links back to the original product and an option to compare the two products.
Winning Results
The results from redirecting customers from a “No Search Results Page” when searching for a discontinued item, to a replacement item’s product page brought in $941k in the first month of the release. The feature was predicted to take in $6.2M for the remainder of the year.
